10 Costa Rica facts you need to know

Volcanoes, mountains, forests, beaches, friendly people, biodiversity… Costa Rica is a mix of these ingredients and much more. But there are some facts about this country that can make you get really impressed.

  1. Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country and we have no army since 1949. We use the money that many countries spend in their armies to invest in our children education.
  2. Our country is small and it only covers the 0.03% of the planet’s surface, but we are home for almost a 5% of the existing biodiversity of the entire world.
  3. More than 25% of our territory is used for conservation of the environment through our national parks and reserves program.
  4. We are surrounded by 1287 kilometers of sea and we enjoy the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. That means we have many wonderful beaches that you can visit and many aquatic activities you can enjoy in our coasts.
  5. In Costa Rica education is free and obligatory for every child and we occupy the first place in quality in the educational system in Latin America.
  6. We also are the most secure country in Latin America, according to the Latin Business Chronicle of 2012.
  7. According to the Worldwide Governance Indicators of the World Bank, we occupy the second place in Latin America in Politic Stability.
  8. We have just 2 seasons in the year. You can enjoy our dry season from December to April and the rainy season from May to November.
  9. We export more than 4500 different products to 146 different countries. We occupy the first place in pineapple exportation in the world and the third place in bananas exportation.
  10. Costa Ricans are known like “ticos” and our slogan is “Pura vida”; that means everything is great. Also, it is common that we use that phrase instead of “hello” or “bye”.
